RBGH?
Friday, March 2, 2007

In order to boost milk production, genetically engineered synthetic growth hormones are injected into cows. Milk production could be increased from 10-15%. These hormones are known as rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone).

Average changes in milk yield and 3.5% fat-corrected milk yield over 32-weeks of rbGH treatment.

However, these hormones endanger milk and the consumer’s health. The nutritional quality of milk produced by cows treated with rBGH has been altered. These hormones too induce steroids and adrenaline-type stressor in cows, which may in turn contaminate milk, resulting them to be harmful, especially towards young children and infants. rBGH milk is also contaminated by the GE hormone which can be absorbed through the gut, inducing immunological effects, by pus from mastitis induced by rBGH, and antibiotics used to treat the mastitis. rBGH is likely to mobilize the existing carcinogens in milk of cows, causing cancer risks to consumers. Researches have shown increased levels of IGF-1 (insulin growth factor-1) in milk from cows treated with rBGH. This heightens the potential risks of breast and other types of cancer (e.g. breast, lung, colon, and prostate cancers).

When consumed, its causes hormonal and allergic effects especially in infants. It could also induce premature growth and breast stimulation in infants, or promote breast cancer in adults.
